BMW X6

The BMW X6 is the world's first ever Sports Activity Coupé, still a unique combination of sporty dynamics and supreme versatility and with further enhanced appeal from spring 2012. Selective modifications in design and innovative equipment features hone the profile of the new BMW X6 as a distinctive model within the premium segment of all-wheel-drive automobiles. Its exceptional standing and ongoing popularity is due to both its highly expressive design, combing the athletic and elegant lines of a coupé with the supremacy of a BMW X model, and the fascinating driving experience provided by powerful petrol and diesel engines fitted with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and the intelligent all-wheel-drive system xDrive, including Dynamic Performance Control.

Since its market launch, more than 150,000 of the Sporty Activity Coupé were sold within approximately three years. This far exceeded the original plans. And the continuing high level of demand for the BMW X6 on the worldwide automobile markets is impressive confirmation of the unusual vehicle concept of the Sports Activity Coupé.

Striking accentuations at the front and rear, adaptive LED headlamps as a fnew option

Precisely modified details in the front view give the new BMW X6 an appearance characterised by exclusive athleticism and supremacy. The standard fog lights are now set in matt finish surrounds in the upper area of the outer air inlets. Their higher and more lateral position emphasises the width of the vehicle. The striking three-dimensional modelling of the frame and newly designed bars, angled in the lower section, make the BMW kidney grille stand out especially conspicuously within the vehicle front section. The angle of the grille bars is flush with the bottom of the headlamp units, thereby creating an additional horizontal line which likewise highlights the wide track and stable road-holding of the new BMW X6.

As an alternative to the standard bi-xenon light, the new BMW X6 is the first vehicle in its segment to be fitted optionally with adaptive LED headlamps. Their bright white light ensures optimum visibility, while their high-quality appearance represents a new interpretation of the brand's hallmark twin circular headlamps. The three-dimensionally shaped luminous rings of the adaptive LED headlamps are strikingly levelled off both at the top and bottom and are overlaid at the upper edge by an LED-fed accent light. The light sources for low and high beam light are LED units positioned on a horizontal bar at its centre, feeding their light into the reflectors in front. In the new BMW X6 M, adaptive LED headlights are fitted as standard.

With its newly designed rear lights with LED technology, the powerfully shaped rear section of the new BMW X6 also features more intense styling. The rear lights are now two LED-fed light banks which create the brand's hallmark night design as a harmoniously glowing light mass. The fact that they are horizontally aligned and stretch far out to the sides emphasises both the width of the vehicle and the flowing transition between the side section and rear.

Attractive supplements to the program of external paint finishes, light alloy wheel and leather trim

The program of external paint finishes for the new BMW X6 consists of two non-metallic and eight metallic colours, including Marrakech Brown metallic, Orion Silver metallic and Midnight Blue metallic. The standard equipment range of the new BMW X6 also includes 19-inch light alloy wheels. In the 8-cylinder model BMW X6 xDrive 50i these now feature a new double spoke design in bi-colour. The selection of light alloy wheels available as an option is supplemented with a 20-inch version in Y-spoke, bi-colour design. An optional feature for the BMW X6 is an engine compartment lid with strikingly shaped powerdome which additionally highlights the powerful appearance of the Sports Activity Coupé (not available in Germany).

The standard leather trim Nevada is now also available in the colour Vermilion Red. The exclusive nappa leather option with extended features now includes a choice between the colours Black and Ebony White. The new BMW X6 is offered as standard as a four-seater model. A three-seater rear bench is optionally available. The luggage compartment volume of the Sports Activity Coupé is 570 litres and can be extended to up to 1,450 litres by folding down the rear backrests.

As an additional option, the M Sport Edition is offered for the new BMW X6 in Germany. This attractive equipment package includes 20-inch M light alloy wheels in double spoke design and bi-colour finish with mixed tyres, adaptive LED headlamps, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, black surrounds for the fog lights and M door sill cover strips. The striking accentuations for the exterior are supplemented with a sporty interior ambience. Features here include the sports seats with electrical adjustment and memory function, M-specific Alcantara/Nappa leather combination in black with M-style welt and contrast stitching, M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, M driver footrest, stainless steel pedals, interior strips in Aluminium Flywheel black and the BMW Individual roof liner in anthracite.

The new BMW X6: dynamic, supreme, efficient, innovative

With the market launch of the new BMW X6, the combination of supreme appearance, agile driving properties and hallmark brand efficiency so characteristic of the Sports Activity Coupé is raised to a new level. The petrol and diesel engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology available for the BMW X6 deliver impressive pulling power and exemplary low fuel consumption figures. The V8 engine of the BMW X6 xDrive50i delivers 300 kW/407 bhp, while in the BMW X6 xDrive35i an in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with 225 kW/306 bhp ensures supreme athletic performance. The in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines of the models BMW X6 xDrive40d and BMW X6 xDrive30d mobilise 225 kW/306 bhp and 180 kW/245 bhp respectively. Both offer not only impressively sporty power delivery but also emission figures based on the EU test cycle of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the BMW X6 xDrive40d and 7.4 litres for the BMW X6 xDrive30d.

For further reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the exhaust gas, the BMW X6 xDrive30d can also be fitted with optional BMW BluePerformance Technology as of spring 2012. Here, in addition to the standard components of diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, the AdBlue system is used, with urea injection and an NOX catalyst storage which eliminates sulphur dioxide as well as nitrogen oxides. This means that the vehicle already meets the requirements for the EU6 emission standard which comes into effect from 2014.

An additional model version based on the new BMW X6 also lines up for the start at the same as the market launch of the latter. The BMW M Performance Automobile BMW X6 M50d sets a new benchmark for pulling power and efficiency with a newly developed 280 kW/381 bhp in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine. Its unique triple turbocharging gives the world's most powerful standard in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine a thrust which sets in early on and is maintained right through to the high engine speed range. Its maximum torque is 740 Newton metres. One of the factors contributing to its exceptional efficiency - especially in relation to its output - is the new version of the common rail direct injection, whose piezo injectors apply a maximum pressure of 2,200 bar. With an acceleration rate of 5.3 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h, the BMW X6 M50d even outdoes 8-cylinder models, while its average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is still only 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres. Its drivetrain, suspension technology and aerodynamic properties have been harmonised with the precision so characteristic of M.

As an additional product offer from BMW M GmbH, the specialists for high-performance sports cars, the BMW X6 M with its V8 engine delivering 408 kW/555 bhp also benefits from detailed refinements in the area of design and equipment. The BMW X6 M is fitted with a 6-speed M Sport automatic transmission, also highlighting its individual status with such features as separately developed suspension technology.

In all other models, engine power is transferred by means of a standard 8-speed sports transmission including shift paddles at the steering wheel. Dynamic Performance Control is a standard feature in all versions of the BMW X6 as an element of the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive. This gives greater precision to the electronically controlled power distribution so as to optimise driving stability, traction and dynamic performance. It particularly comes to bear when taking bends in sporty style. Even as the car enters the bend, xDrive feeds additional power to the rear wheels so as to support an agile turn-in response. By means of continuously variable distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels, Dynamic Performance Control also optimises tracking stability under high transverse acceleration forces as well as traction when accelerating out of a bend. For additional enhancement of agility and supremacy, the systems Active Steering (not available for the BMW X6 M50d and the BMW X6 M) and Adaptive Drive (as standard in the BMW X6 M50d and the BMW X6 M) are offered with electronically controlled dampers and roll stabilisation.

The progressive character of the new BMW X6 is also underscored by the extensive range of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive. In addition to BMW Head-Up-Display, features available for the Sports Activity Coupé include the systems Lane Departure Warning (not for the BMW X6 M50d and the BMW X6 M), Speed Limit Info, Side View and Rear View camera with Top View. The new BMW X6 is also optimised by means of intelligent networking with the integration of smartphones and music players in the vehicle and the use of innovative infotainment functions.

The BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) embodies a concentrated blend of state-of-the-art development expertise - inspired directly by motor sport - in the areas of drive system and chassis technology and intelligent lightweight design. It also represents the worldwide debut of a new production process for carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components in the automotive industry. This process allows CFRP to be introduced widely in the construction of the high-performance BMW M3 Saloon-based sports car created by the BMW M GmbH factory. And that helps it achieve a weight-to-power ratio of 3.5 kilograms per horsepower. A V8 engine with customary M high-revving characteristics and maximum output of 331 kW/450 hp accelerates the BMW M3 CRT from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

The BMW M3 CRT will be produced by the BMW M GmbH factory in a limited run of 67 units. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW M3 GTS - of which 135 examples were produced - this is the second small-series, high-performance M3 off-shoot to be bred for the race track but registered for the road. The exclusive character of the Saloon is emphasised by bespoke lightweight design components manufactured as part of an innovative production process. The bonnet of the BMW M3 CRT and the bucket seats for the driver and front passenger are made from a cellular carbon honeycomb, which is produced in a globally unique process pioneered for the manufacture of body components for the BMW i3 and BMW i8 models.

Innovative manufacturing process for lightweight CFRP components.

These new models - due to enter volume production in 2013 and equipped with innovative electric and BMW ActiveHybrid drive system technology - will feature a body consisting entirely of CFRP in the passenger cell area. In a new development, the production process introduced for this purpose enables the cuttings left behind in the construction of the body to be reprocessed. The basic material (made up of carbon fibre thread) can now be woven into CFRP mats of any size before being impregnated with synthetic resin and hardened in a similar way to the material used in the body of the BMW i3 and BMW i8. For the BMW M3 CRT this allows the creation of a bonnet made from two CFRP mouldings encasing an aramid honeycomb structure. This construction imbues the bonnet with the strength of a conventional steel equivalent, but at roughly a quarter of its weight. The weight saving over the aluminium bonnet of the standard BMW M3 Saloon is around 50 per cent.

The material produced through this innovative manufacturing technology is also used for the car's bucket seats. Here, the CFRP layers are wrapped around a recycled-paper honeycomb, with a carbon layer made using conventional production technology added to visible areas. CFRP is also used to make both the rear spoiler of the BMW M3 CRT and an air-channelling element integrated into its front apron.

This innovative manufacturing process opens up considerable potential for increased use of CFRP in series-produced cars as a means of lowering weight. The BMW Group is leading the way in this area of automotive construction, while BMW M GmbH can call on extensive racing expertise when it comes to intelligent lightweight design. The BMW M3 CRT is the latest in a fine tradition of highly exclusive high-performance sports cars optimised with the help of lightweight design. This lineage stretches back to the BMW 3.0 CSL of the 1970s and reached another high point in 2002 with the BMW M3 CSL. BMW M GmbH also broke new ground with the use of CFRP in series-produced vehicles; like the BMW M6 produced up to 2010, the current BMW M3 Coupé comes as standard with a roof made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic.

Significant weight reduction despite generous standard equipment.

The low-weight construction of the BMW M3 CRT is enhanced by sound-proofing configured specially for the new variant and a sports exhaust system with an extremely lightweight titanium muffler. Also unique to the CRT are the two individual rear seats, which take their cues from the lateral support-enhancing contours of the front seats.

Included in the standard specification of the BMW M3 CRT are the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, Navigation system Professional, BMW Individual High End audio system, a light, exterior mirror and luggage area package, an alarm system and Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear of the car. Despite this extremely generous selection of standard kit, its DIN unladen weight of 1,580 kg undercuts that of the standard BMW M3 Saloon by around 45 kg. When you take into account the equipment on board the weight saving is more like 70 kg. Added to which, cleverly reducing the load at the front of the car raises the proportion of the car's weight over the rear axle to 48.4 per cent, which has an extremely positive effect on agility.

High-revving V8 engine with extra power; M DCT Drivelogic.

Under the CFRP bonnet of the BMW M3 CRT lies a variant of the V8 engine developed exclusively for the BMW M3 with further increased displacement, output and maximum torque. The high-revving unit provides the linear power delivery you expect from an M car and a highly responsive performance profile honed by the demands of the race track. Tuned for the BMW M3 GTS, the eight-cylinder engine develops 331 kW/450 hp from its 4,360 cc displacement. Maximum output is reached at 8,300 rpm, and the driver will find peak torque of 440 Newton metres on tap at 3,750 rpm. Helping to give the engine its intoxicating performance is wizardry derived directly from motor sport, including a bedplate crankcase construction in a special aluminium-silicon alloy, individual throttle butterflies, a knock control system with ion current technology and a dynamically-optimised wet sump oil supply.

Transferring the engine's power to the rear wheels is the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic developed for the BMW M3. The seven-speed M DCT Drivelogic unit also works according to a principle developed in motor sport, allowing an uninterrupted flow of power through gear changes to deliver extremely dynamic acceleration. Its shift characteristics have been tuned specially for the engine powering the BMW M3 CRT. Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow the driver to change gear manually with optimum ergonomics. And a Launch Control function is on hand to generate maximum acceleration off the start line.

Special chassis construction with race-bred technology.

Expertise from race competition also makes its presence felt in the chassis technology of the BMW M3 CRT. The BMW M3 Saloon's front and rear axle construction has been enhanced by a rigid rear axle subframe and coilover suspension whose dampers are individually adjustable in their compression and rebound. The six-piston, fixed-calliper high-performance brakes of the BMW M3 CRT boast a low-weight compound construction. The vented brake discs measure 378 x 32 millimetres at the front axle and 380 x 28 millimetres at the rear. The new M3 variant also uses Stahlflex brake lines and model-specific comfort brake pads.

The specially tuned DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system - including ABS and M Dynamic Mode (MDM) - responds to both the greater dynamic potential of the BMW M3 CRT and its optimised axle load distribution. Meanwhile, the 245/35 R 19 front tyres and 265/35 R 19 rears (fitted on 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design) ensure the engine's acceleration and braking power is transferred to the road with maximum impact. The electronic engine management of the BMW M3 CRT caps its top speed at 290 km/h.

The exclusive Frozen Polar Silver metallic exterior paint shade in combination with Melbourne Red metallic applications and special treatment for the BMW kidney grille also help to set the BMW M3 CRT apart from the standard M3. Inside, the Saloon comes with likewise exclusive door sill strips, door panels and trim strips in aluminium grain structure. Completing the distinctive ambience inside the high-performance Saloon are the Alcantara-covered M steering wheel, which has an M Drive button allowing the driver to call up his preferred set-up instantly, and special Sakhir Orange and Black bi-colour covers for the front and individual rear seats.

BMW 5-Series

More convincingly than any other car in its class, the BMW 5-Series combines supreme style and presence with sporting power and performance. And now the design, driving experience and superior comfort offered by the 5-Series reach a new standard of perfection. Highly attractive refinements to the exterior and significant, visible and tangible enhancement of style and sophistication in the interior accentuate the sporting, elegant character of the BMW 5-Series Sedan and BMW 5-Series Touring. The premium ambience within the car's interior is borne out by sophisticated materials, attractive colors and re-designed interior elements and controls.

Power units more muscular than before and with exceptional all-round efficiency raise the line-up of engines in the 5-Series to a higher standard. Benefiting from this kind of power, the BMW 5-Series is entering a new dimension of Efficient Dynamics attributable to a wide range of enhancements on and around the engine for maximum fuel economy and minimum emissions. A particular highlight is BMW's innovative High Precision Injection direct fuel injection technology featured on the twin turbo straight-six power unit in the 535i models. Other new drivetrain developments are the updated, quick and precise six-speed automatic transmission as well as BMW's unique optional Automatic Sports Transmission with shift paddles.

Two engine variants on the new BMW 5-Series are available with BMW xDrive permanent and variable all-wheel-drive technology. In this intelligent all-wheel-drive system, optimized control and management electronics ensure spontaneous and precise response to changes in driving conditions.

The new BMW 5-Series also offers a wide range of innovations in driver assistance and comfort features. As an example, it is the only car in its segment available with Active Steering, BMW Night Vision, Head-Up Display and, new for 2008, Lane Departure Warning and Active Cruise Control featuring a Stop & Go function.

The standard iDrive control system, newly provided with six programmable memory keys, as well as an available navigation system with voice recognition, enhance the long-distance touring comfort of the BMW 5-Series.

Exterior design: sporting character with new elegance.

New highlights in design and ongoing refinement ensure even greater harmony of sporting character and sophisticated elegance in the BMW 5-Series Sedan and BMW 5-Series Touring. The headlights in their characteristic look, for example, now come with new clear glass technology, transparent glass panels covering the direction indicators, and chrome surrounds highlighting the technically sophisticated character of the round headlights.

The surrounds on the BMW double kidney grille, in turn, are now flush with the surfaces on the front air dam, and the air intake sweeping up at the side along the same dynamic line as the headlight contours also contributes to the smooth, harmonious and friendly look of the front end. And last but not least, the horizontal trim bar in the middle highlights the wide track of the car and its muscular stance on the road.

An additional light contour along the side-sills gives the body of both the Sedan and the BMW 5-Series Touring a sleeker, more stretched look from the side. The rear end, in turn, is dominated by horizontal lines highlighting the look of superior power. Like the headlights at the front, the rear lights also come in a new, sophisticated clear-glass look and now feature LED direction indicators. And last but certainly not least, the trim bar around the rear number plate is now defined more smoothly and precisely on the Sedan.

Refined and sophisticated style within the interior.

Enhanced control comfort, new design and particularly sophisticated materials give the interior of the new BMW 5-Series a new standard of quality the driver and passengers will see and feel at first sight. Pearl Gloss Chrome, the very pleasant rubber finish on the controls for smooth and easy handling, comfortable padding on the door armrests and panels as well as on the center console all contribute to the style and class of the interior. At the same time, additional storage options give the new BMW 5-Series an enhanced standard of practical function.

The most striking feature is the twin-tone finish on the door panels: black door trim bars at the top and the lower panel section in the interior color, together with elegantly sweeping bars, take up and continue the look and materials used on the dashboard. The buttons for window lifts and mirror adjustment have been integrated in the armrest, just as the handles for closing the doors have been optimized in their ergonomic design. The door pockets, integrated more effectively than before in the door panels, provide greater storage capacity for enhanced convenience on the road.

In its appealing look and ideal ergonomics, the new electrical gear selector lever for the automatic transmission merges perfectly into the stylish interior. Control of the iDrive vehicle management system has also been enhanced. Apart from enhanced menu guidance and refined graphics, the new programmable memory keys ensure more intuitive control and operation. These keys allow the driver and front passenger to access important functions quickly, smoothly and easily: A single button press will activate, for example, a specific destination, a frequently dialed telephone number, or a preferred radio station saved in advance.

Power units: opening up a new dimension of Efficient Dynamics.

Depending on the specific engine involved, the various models in the new BMW 5-Series come with a range of technologies and features serving to minimize fuel consumption and emissions. For example, one such technology is Brake Energy Regeneration, which concentrates the generation of electricity for the on-board network on the car's overrun and brake phases.

Operating on-demand, the electrical coolant pump in the new BMW 5-Series 6-cylinder engines consumes significantly less power than a conventional pump and helps the engine reach its normal operating temperature earlier. The Varioserv steering assistance pump, varying the curve ring as a function of pressure and volume flow, avoids the usual increase in drive losses as a function of higher engine speeds. And when the driver and passengers do not require the air conditioning, the a/c compressor is disconnected to reduce drag forces to a minimum.

New 6-cylinder engines for a perfect combination of muscle and refinement

Two 6-cylinder versions will be available in the US. The powerful 535i models feature BMW's newest inline six-cylinder engine with twin turbochargers and an intercooler for 300 incredibly flexible horsepower, thanks to high precision direct fuel injection with piezo injectors. The 528i variants feature a 230-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with Valvetronic technology and aluminum/magnesium construction.

The 535i models are powered by the world's first inline six-cylinder with Twin Turbo and High Precision Direct Injection technology and an all-aluminum crankcase. Rated at 300 hp at 5,800 rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 1,400 - 5,000 rpm, this 3.0-liter engine offers cutting-edge performance thanks to the theories behind BMW's Efficient Dynamics.

Using high-tech materials allows the engine to be a lightweight performer, which helps BMW achieve near 50/50 weight distribution on this and all of its vehicles. Low inertia turbocharger internals and high precision direct fuel injection makes turbo lag nearly non-existent as peak torque starts at a mere 1,400 rpm. High precision direct injection is also ideal for lean burn operation. In the lean burn mode, various intercepting layers of the fuel and air form within the combustion chamber. The fuel/air mixture is therefore particularly rich and ignitable only in the direct vicinity of the spark plug and once ignited, the flame travels to the leaner layers further from the spark plug for a clean, smooth and consistent combustion process. Redline is still an impressive 7,000 rpm and compression ratio is 10.2:1. Typical of a BMW engine are incredible smoothness, fast-revving response and refined power at all engine speeds.

The 528i models are equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that delivers 230 smooth horsepower at a peak of 6,500rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 rpm. Featuring BMW's innovative Valvetronic engine system, which eliminates the conventional throttle body for throttle control, efficiency and power are available over a broader range for silky-smooth operation. The magnesium/aluminum block is a perfect example of BMW Efficient Dynamics where lightweight technology is at work and where efficiency can be felt at the accelerator pedal.

In the European version BMW 530i the 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine develops a dynamic 200 kW/272 hp. Acceleration to 100 km/h comes in 6.3 seconds in the Sedan and takes 6.5 seconds in the BMW 530i Touring. Top speed of both models, in turn, is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph. At 7.7 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 36.7 mpg Imp) (Sedan) and 7.9 litres/100 kilometres (35.8 mpg Imp) (BMW 5-Series Touring), average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is approximately 12 per cent better than with the former models. And the improvement of fuel efficiency is even greater on the BMW 530i with automatic transmission, being reduced to 7.5 litres (Sedan) and, respectively, 7.7 litres (BMW 5-Series Touring) (37.7 and, respectively, 36.7 mpg Imp).

The 550i's V-8

The 550i's predecessor was widely acclaimed by most who drove or tested the 545i, not merely for its strong, fuel-efficient power, but also for its highly pleasing sound. Car and Driver (May '04) summed it up as "among the friendliest, most enthusiastic engines in existence." With 4.8 liters, the 550i's V-8 delivers even more brilliant performance. Peak power is 360 hp; peak torque is 360 lb-ft.

To further enhance performance, the optional 550i Sport Package newly includes an Aero Kit, modified-calibration Sport suspension, 19" wheels and performance tires, and a short shift lever, in addition to Multi-Contour seats with lumbar support, sport steering wheel, sport exhaust system, and Active Roll Stabilization.

Optional: six-speed automatic transmission and automatic sports mode.

As an option and, indeed, as a highly interesting alternative to the standard six-speed manual gearbox, all model variants in the BMW 5-Series are available with a six-speed automatic transmission as a no-extra-cost option.

Apart from the direct connection to the engine, this transmission stands out in particular through its upgraded hydraulics, innovative torque converter and even more powerful management software, ensuring a more spontaneous response to even the slightest movement of the gas pedal and an extremely fast and efficient gearchange. On the road, this means reaction times now some 40 per cent faster than on former automatic transmission models, with the actual gearchange time being almost halved. Shifting back a gear is now just as fast, too, thanks to the direct gear path finder.

The automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic gear selector lever following the usual gearshift pattern. The new gear selector lever moves back to its initial position once the gear selected is in mesh, with the transmission itself masterminded not in a mechanical process, but rather via electrical signals.

As an additional alternative, the optional six-speed Sport Automatic Transmission will be available in the BMW 550i and 535i equipped with the optional Sport Package. This new transmission offers the high standard of motoring comfort so typical of the latest generation of automatic transmissions and at the same time allows the driver to shift gears in even more sporting style in the manual mode, the driver choosing gears sequentially either by means of the gear selector lever introduced exclusively for this special transmission or by means of gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. The Sport Automatic will be available beginning with June 2007 production.

Active Steering for unique driving comfort.

Standard in the BMW 5-Series, Servotronic serves to vary the degree of steering assistance as a function of road speed. At the same time, the BMW 5-Series has optionally available Active Steering, varying the steering angle in accordance with vehicle speed: with the same movement of the steering wheel, the front wheels will move further to the left and right at low speeds than at high speeds. This allows the driver to maneuver the car with less effort and force on the steering when parking, while at high speeds it is easier to remain precisely on track.

Even more precise: BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system for the 5-Series.

BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system, available as an alternative to standard rear-wheel drive, offers a particular experience in superior traction. Permanent and variable distribution of power provided by xDrive gives the BMW 528xi and 535xi Sedans and 535xi Sports Wagon supreme driving characteristics on a variety of terrain and driving conditions. Distributing the power of the engine via an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch variably to all four wheels, xDrive significantly enhances the dynamic driving qualities of the Sedan and the BMW 5-Series Touring. And to ensure even more precise control of the drivetrain, the DSC and xDrive computer units are now networked with one another in a new, innovative concept.

Cruise Control with braking function.

Standard on all 2008 BMW 5-Series models is Cruise Control, complete with a special braking function. Contrary to conventional cruise control, this intelligent new system is able to control the road speed of the car not just via the drag force generated by the engine and by shifting down on models with automatic transmission, but also by activating the brakes, thus keeping the car at a consistent speed when, say, driving downhill for a long distance. And using the Curve Speed Limiter, the system is also able to reduce road speed in bends whenever required for reasons of driving dynamics.

Active Cruise Control complete with Stop & Go.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go offers the driver greater support and ease of motoring. This innovative system, available as an option on automatic transmission versions of the new BMW 5-Series, comes with automatic distance control enabling the driver to cruise along smoothly and conveniently on highways or country roads. The system keeps a consistent following distance from the vehicle ahead even in stop-and-go traffic at very low speeds and applying the brakes where necessary until the car reaches a standstill.

The system uses radar sensors of the latest generation with an enlarged area of vision, offering the driver a choice of four distance settings. Once the distance the driver has chosen to the vehicle ahead is no longer maintained, the system will intervene, building up brake pressure to control the car accordingly. Then, once the road ahead is free again, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go will accelerate the car to the set speed.

This sophisticated control system is also able to reduce speed automatically to a standstill as a function of traffic conditions. In this case, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go slows the car to a standstill and holds it in position. The maximum brake force applied by Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is 4 meters/sec2. Should the driver be required to intervene because the vehicle ahead is being decelerated very hard, the driver is warned to intervene by visual and acoustic signals.

In stop-and-go traffic, the system helps the driver by automatically maintaining the appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead, relieving the driver constantly having to apply the brakes in slow and unsmooth traffic. However, the driver still retains his responsibility, since after, for example, a short stop of more than three seconds, he is required to briefly press down the accelerator pedal or press the Resume button in order to re-accelerate the car. And even when Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is activated, the driver is able to control the speed of his car at any time simply by giving gas or applying the brakes. Depressing the brake pedal while driving deactivates the system.

Keeping reliably on course: Lane Departure Warning.

To enhance driver awareness, the new BMW 5-Series is available with a newly developed and unique assistance system helping to keep the car on course in the lane chosen by the driver. Referred to as "Lane Departure Warning", this innovative system identifies any deviations from the correct course of the car and, if the turn signal has not been used, gives the driver a discreet but tangible vibrating signal in the steering wheel itself. The Lane Departure Warning system consists of a camera fitted near the interior mirror on the windscreen, a control unit serving to compare data, and a signaling device.

Head-Up Display and driver support in poor weather with limited visibility.

The BMW 5-Series is the only car in its segment available with a Head-Up Display. Activating this function, the driver has the benefit of receiving information and data particularly relevant for motoring directly in front of his eyes on the windscreen. As an example, the current speed of the car or navigation data is in the direct line of vision with maximum convenience at all times.

In combination with the available xenon headlights, the new BMW 5-Series comes with a daytime running light function (selectable via Vehicle memory System) using the corona rings in the dual round headlights. The headlights include Adaptive Headlight technology, illuminating the road ahead following the curves taken by the driver. In this case, the headlights swivel in accordance with the position of the steering wheel, the yaw rate of the car, and its road speed. In addition, the Cornering Light function adjusts the direction of the headlights when turning corners at less than 25 mph.

Unique in this segment, BMW Night Vision is based on a thermal imaging camera able to detect people, animals and objects, on and next to the road, up to a distance of almost 1,000 feet, transmitting a clear, high-contrast image to the Control Display.

Unique and premium equipment.

Offering a wide range of safety and comfort features, the new BMW 5-Series makes every trip an experience in pleasure. To supplement the wide range of standard equipment, the 5-Series is available with a wide choice of high-tech audio, navigation, Bluetooth and telematic functions.

New for 2008 is an optional iPod/USB Adapter that will accommodate an iPod as well as other MP3 players, and will also allow the vehicle to be equipped with a CD changer at the same time. With this option, the driver will have full control of iPod functions and menus via the steering wheel audio controls. Other available features include HD Radio, now with multicasting reception capability, SIRIUS satellite radio, and a Navigation system that now includes Real Time Traffic Information.

BMW 5-Series Security

With the BMW 5-Series Security, BMW offers an armoured sedan in the premium segment of the upper medium category. Thanks to their unique security concept, the BMW 550i Security and the BMW 530i Security guarantee effective protection from criminal attacks. The two models combine state-of-the-art security technology with the sporty flair, ride comfort and exclusive fittings characteristic of the BMW 5-Series.

The BMW 5-Series provides an ideal basis for a particularly effective security vehicle at the VR4 ballistic protection level. The sedan offers an impressively striking and prestigious design, supreme handling, generous space and uncompromising premium quality. Superior driving dynamics is ensured by the 8-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines available for the security vehicle, the innovative lightweight construction with aluminium/steel body and all-aluminium chassis as well as sophisticated chassis systems such as Active Steering and the roll stabilisation function Dynamic Drive. What is more, fittings such as the operating concept iDrive, BMW Night Vision and Adaptive Headlight including turning light and variable light distribution emphasise the outstanding status of the BMW 5-Series.

8-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines to choose from: supreme power at two output levels.

The BMW 5-Series Security is offered in two model versions, both of which have identical security features. The BMW 550i Security is powered by a 4.8- litre 8-cylinder engine which offers top-class refinement, supreme power delivery across a wide engine speed range and exemplary efficiency. The V8 engine, with the throttle-free valve control system VALVETRONIC, variable camshaft control Double VANOS for the intake and outlet side and an intake system which operates at two levels, delivers 270 kW/367 bhp and achieves a maximum torque of 490 Nm.

In the BMW 530i Security there is a 3.0 litre inline 6-cylinder engine with a magnesium-aluminium compound crankcase which has an output of 200 kW/272 bhp and a maximum torque of 315 Nm. In the security model, too, it impressively brings out the qualities which are characteristic of BMW 6- cylinder engines - dynamic power delivery, high revving power and exemplary running smoothness. Both model versions boast supreme driving performance figures in everyday traffic and also have extensive power reserves which allow the driver to escape dangerous situations by means of a swift response. Both the BMW 550i Security and the BMW 530i Security are fitted as standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW 550i Security reaches a speed of 100 km/h from standing in just 6.5 seconds. The corresponding acceleration rate of the BMW 530i Security is 6.5 seconds. Both models have an electronically cut-off top speed of 240 km/h.

Extensive protection against criminal attacks.

With its security vehicles, BMW responds to increasing violence and criminal threats ("carjacking", kidnapping) in numerous regions of the world. This includes Latin America, parts of South-East Asia and the Middle East and some states of the former Soviet Union. The criminal acts in question are frequently random in nature and generally speaking are not directed at the passengers themselves but are committed with the intention of stealing valuables or the vehicle itself. The BMW 5-Series Security is excellently equipped to fend off such attacks since the entire passenger cell is bulletresistant and its armour fulfils the requirements of ballistic protection level VR4. This means that the BMW 5-Series Security can resist attacks with impact weapons as well as hand weapons and handguns up to a calibre of .44 Magnum including .357 Magnum or 9 mm Luger. The appropriate certification is provided by the German ballistic authority Beschussamt Mellrichstadt based on the norm for bullet-resistant vehicles, BRV 1999. At the request of BMW, the ballistic testing goes far beyond the usual requirements. In addition to the stipulated firing angles of 90° and 45°, the tests include other firing angles in order to make them more realistic, with the relevant certification being provided.

The highly effective protection of the BMW 5-Series Security derives from its integrated protective systems which are installed by hand with painstaking care by highly qualified experts at a special plant in Toluca (Mexico). A precisely defined combination of casings, moulded parts and panels is used to armour the vehicle. These are largely made of materials which are bulletresistant but nonetheless of low weight. At critical points such as the gaps and borders of the synthetic fibre mats, rust-proof chrome-nickel steel is used. This provides optimum all-round protection for the passenger cell. On request, a shatter protection element can be integrated in the underbody.

In order to ensure seamless protection and still preserve a lower weight, highquality and extremely carefully finished fibre mats are used for the armourplating of the BMW 5-Series Security. Aramid mats are thus used for the roof and the body columns and for the front wall to the footwell and the back wall to the luggage compartment. This material is the same as that used for bulletproof police vests. Not only is it bullet-resistant, it also resilient to heat, fire and acid. The protective mats in the areas of the doors are made of the even lighter and equally bullet-proof material polyethylene, which absorbs the impact energy of a projectile especially well due to its structure. Chrome-nickel steel is used for bordering the protective mats, sealing the gaps in the door sections and reinforcing window edges.

The security glazing of the BMW 5-Series Security consists of a 22 mm thick compound of plastic and glass. The multi-layered glass is also bullet-resistant according to VR4 ballistic protection levels and is resilient to attack by impact weapons. The window panes also have a polycarbonate coating which provides shatter protection for the vehicle interior.

In contrast to retrofitted armour plating, which frequently leaves security gaps and leads to excessive weight strain on vehicle parts, the integrated protection concept for BMW Security Vehicles covers all potential weak points. This includes body joints, door gaps and the transitions between metal and glass. Due to the model-specific conception of the protective features, which also includes gap sealing, care is taken to ensure that neither projectiles nor shattered glass can penetrate into the interior of the vehicle at critical points.

Low additional weight, unconstrained comfort, inconspicuous exterior.

In spite of the extensive security features, the generous interior of the BMW 5-Series Security is preserved virtually without limitation due to the intelligent space concept, with almost the entire range of extensive comfort features still available. The additional weight does not impair the dynamic character of the BMW 5-Series and the security vehicles thus provide the sporty feel which is characteristic of BMW. The additional weight as compared to the corresponding serial production vehicles is just 250 kg. This is significantly less than that of comparable security vehicles produced by competitors in the premium segment.

From the outside, the BMW 5-Series Security is virtually indistinguishable from its serial production counterpart, since many customers attach great importance to discretion and anonymity.

Active safety and top-level handling.

The chassis of the BMW 5-Series Security is perfectly adapted to the additional weight. For this purpose, specific chassis components such as springs and dampers are fitted, as well as a particularly high-performance brake system. The electronics box in the engine compartment is protected by means of aramid panels so as to ensure it continues to function even in extreme situations. The BMW 5-Series Security also has tyres with emergency running properties. This means that the tyres remain operational even in the event of a complete loss of pressure - for example after being fired at or when driven over sharp objects. Even with a full load, these tyres enable the vehicle to be driven for a further distance of some 50 kilometres at a speed of up to 80 km/h.

Perfect handling in demanding driving situations is ensured by the innovative chassis technology of the BMW 5-Series. The driver of a BMW security vehicle also benefits from this in extreme conditions. In the BMW 5-Series Security, as in the serial production models of the BMW 5-Series, the driving dynamics regulation system Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is fitted, offering a wide range of functions. DSC suppresses both oversteering and understeering in difficult situations on the road. The system also includes a so called anti-fading support: any decrease in brake power at extremely high temperatures is set off by increasing brake forces accordingly. Moderate build-up of brake forces also enhances brake standby in situations which may require spontaneous deceleration. Regular dry braking optimizes performance of the brakes in the wet, while the start-off assistant facilitates the process of setting off on an uphill gradient.

The DSC system also includes the special mode Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). Activated by pressing a button, this mode raises the response thresholds for driving stability regulation and thus makes it easier to set off on snow or loose sand, for example. DTC also enables the driver to take bends in a highly sporty style.

The chassis system Dynamic Drive also reduces roll movements of the BMW 5-Series Security on bends to a minimum. In this way, both agility and comfort is increased at all speed ranges, as well as providing optimum selfsteering and load alteration response. The optional feature Active Steering is also available: this varies steering transmission in relation to road speed. At low speeds, Active Steering enables the vehicle to be manoeuvred into a parking space with very little movement of the steering wheel, for example, while at high speeds a more indirect steering response optimises drive stability.

Optimum visibility: Xenon headlamps, BMW Night Vision and camera systems.

The BMW 5-Series Security can be optionally fitted with xenon headlamps and Adaptive Headlight. This ensures that curves in the road are illuminated accordingly. The swivel direction of the headlamps is derived from the position of the steering wheel, the yaw rate and the speed of the vehicle. This feature also includes the turning light function, which adapts the direction of illumination at speeds of less than 40 km/h.

What is more, visibility on straight stretches of road is optimised by the new variable light distribution function. This innovative control system, which like the turning light is part of the special equipment feature Adaptive Headlight, automatically enlarges the field of vision by specifically expanding the light cone in relation to the road speed. In urban light mode at speeds under 50 km/h, identification of objects on the left-hand side of the road is facilitated by means of a wider light distribution, for example. In motorway light mode, the field of vision is expanded by an elongation of the light cone and a more intensive illumination of the area to the left. As soon as the driver activates the fog lamps in addition, the variable light distribution function applies a wider light distribution in the speed range up to 70 km/h, as well as brightening the area close to the vehicle. At higher speeds, both the breadth and range of the light is increased.

An even higher degree of safety for nocturnal driving is provided by the optionally available system BMW Night Vision. The core of this system is a thermal image camera which detects people, animals and objects at the edge of the road at a distance of 300 metres and transmits a contrasting image to the central Control Display which is also used by the navigation system. In this way, the driver's attention is drawn to possible dangers which cannot be identified with the naked eye.

An additional option for the BMW 5-Series Security is a rear view camera. This video system facilitates parking and manoeuvring in spaces where this limited room or poor visibility. The high-resolution images of the rear view camera with wide-angle lens are displayed by the system in colour and with optimised perspective on the Control Display. Interactive track lines also indicate to the driver the optimum steering angle and tightest possible turning circle. Early detection of dangerous situations ahead of the vehicle is facilitated by the innovative system Side View. It operates using two cameras integrated in the front wheel arches which allow early observation of sideon traffic. The images from these cameras are transferred to the Control Display and not only offer an additional convenience when manoeuvring the vehicle but also provide an advance view of what is happening to the left and right of the vehicle when exiting driveways with limited space or poor visibility or when driving out of a multi-storey car park.

Security technology off the production line: Intercom system and alarm system.

The BMW 5-Series Security is fitted with an intercom system and an attack alarm. This means that it is possible to hold conversations with people outside the vehicle without having to open doors and windows. When the attack alarm is triggered, windows and doors are automatically locked, and both acoustic and visual alarm signals are set off.

The standard range of equipment also includes sun blinds for the rear and side windows which obstruct the view into the passenger area, as well as two side airbags at the rear. At the front, the BMW 5-Series Security is fitted with front, pelvis and thorax airbags as well as curtain airbags at the side.

Virtually all the other comfort options available for the BMW 5-Series are likewise available for the BMW 5-Series Security. In addition, individual wishes can be taken into account which go beyond the special equipment program and the integrated protection features. In this way, the sedan combines the outstandingly high level of security ensured by the integrated protective features with extensive individualisation options.

BMW Z4 Roadster

Coinciding with the launch of the BMW Z4 M Roadster, the entire Z4 Roadster range receives visual and substantial mechanical enhancements.

Engines:
Topping the new range is the Z4 3.0si, featuring BMW's innovative magnesium alloy in-line six-cylinder engine. Featuring Valvetronic valve lift and VANOS valve timing, the Z4 3.0si develops 265hp at 6,600rpm and 315Nm of torque at 2,750rpm. These impressive statistics help power the car from zero to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and, if left unchecked, continues to a maximum electronically limited top speed of 155mph. However, these levels of performance aren't at the expense of economy, with the 3.0si delivering 32.8mpg over the combined cycle.

Two in-line six-cylinder 2.5-litre variants will be offered - the Z4 2.5si and 2.5i. Based on the same engine, but differentiated by output, the 2.5si offers 218hp and 250Nm of torque from its 2,497cc powerplant. This gives the power to sprint from standstill to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph, while still delivering 33.6mpg on the combined cycle. By contrast, the 2.5i delivers 177hp and 230Nm of torque.

The only engine carried over from the out-going range is the four-cylinder Z4 2.0i that was launched in April 2005. Produced at BMW's Hams Hall plant near Coventry, the 1,995cc engine features BMW's Valvetronic and VANOS technologies to develop 150hp at 6,200rpm and 200Nm of torque at 3,600rpm. The lighter weight of this engine helps deliver sharp performance, with the Z4 2.0i dispatching the zero to 62mph sprint in 8.2 seconds before hitting a top speed of 137mph.

Transmission:
Like the Z4 M Roadster, all new Z4 models come as standard with a six-speed gearbox. Alternatively, customers purchasing 2.5si and 3.0si models can specify a six-speed automatic gearbox which, for the first time, features paddles on the rear of the steering wheel to select the appropriate gear manually.

Sport models:
Sport models are available to enhance the 'standard' Z4 line-up, featuring 18-inch M double spoke or optional composite alloy wheel, M Sports seats covered in Active Sports leather upholstery, three-spoke M leather steering wheel and M Sports suspension. Sport models will add further appeal to those demanding a particularly sporting drive.

Design:
At launch in 2003, the BMW Z4 instantly became one of the company's most distinctive designs. This design positioned the car as much more of a driver's car dynamically than the Z3 it replaced. This performance focus remains, with subtle enhancements rather than wholesale changes.

From the front, the shoulder line extends all the way to the front air dam rather than stopping at the bonnet edge, a wider air intake dominates the lower valance and the kidney grille receives minor changes. Additionally, the headlights have been re-designed and now include corona light rings as standard on all cars specified with Xenon lamps (standard on M Roadster models).

From the side, US-style side reflectors are integrated into the front wheel arches that also house new alloy wheel designs.

From the rear, all-new tail lamps feature Z8-style horizontal light conductor rods and BMW's Brake Force Display braking system while a second spoiler lip adorns the rear air dam. Finally, all Z4 Roadster models feature a new colour choice including Monaco Blue, Flamenco Red, Silver Grey and Deep Green.
