ABOUT
CITROEN
Citroën, one of the world's most distinctive brands, has long been recognised for sophisticated design and intelligent engineering. Citroën is part of the PSA Group, which is Europe's second largest manufacturer of cars and the leading manufacturer of light commercial vehicles. The entire Citroën range is designed for the well-being and comfort of customers.

Citroën takes pride in being a responsible car manufacturer. Today, Citroën is renowned for being highly awarded innovators in the field of automotive safety and is also highly recognised for its efficient and clean driveline technology.

When it comes to safety, Citroën, with the C6 model, has one of the highest ever combined EuroNCAP scores with 100 points in the EuroNCAP safety tests. This same vehicle was also one of the first cars ever to achieve maximum ratings for both pedestrian safety and adult occupant protection, making it one of the safest cars on the market.

In 2007, the European Federation for Transport (independent organisation) revealed that the PSA Group is the car maker with the lowest average emissions across its entire range. This confirmed the PSA Group's environmental leadership in Europe for the second year running. In 2007, the Group sold 1,000,000 vehicles emitting less than 140g/km of CO2, of which 750,000 were under 130g/km. In the less than 130g/km CO2 segment in Europe, the Group's market share exceeded 26%.

More than any other carmaker, Citroën can lay proud claim to a story that is also the history of the 20th century. To illustrate this fact, the DS took third place in the Car of the Century competition held in Las Vegas in December 1999. The history of the Marque is underpinned by strong, enduring values. Each vehicle and each object bears witness to the way in which Citroën has grasped these values, giving them life and substance. Our past is fundamental, enabling us to understand the present and, above all, to prepare for the future.

CITROEN HISTORY
Andre Citroën founds his first company in 1902 and begins importing modern industrial working methods to France.

By 1919 he begins to sell cars under his own name. Citroën acquires a patent for a gear-cutting technique with chevron-shaped teeth. The shape of these gears provided the inspiration for the celebrated double chevron, emblem on all vehicles produced by Citroën.

The Type A appears in June 1919 and was among the first mass-produced European cars. By the end of the year Citroën is producing thirty cars a day.

1920s. In 1920 Citroën wins the fuel economy grand prix at Le Mans, and its fame rapidly beings to spread.

In 1922 Citroën pioneeres the first 'sports' car, the Caddy, developed from a standard production model.

At the 1924 Paris Motor Show, Citroën presents the all steel bodied B10. It offers better impact protection when compared to conventional wood-and-steel construction techniques and from this time all new Citroëns are of all-metal construction.

From 1925 until 1934, Citroën's name was displayed in lights on the Eiffel Tower, in letters 30 metres high.

1930s. In 1934, when cars were still built from a wooden structure covered with metal parts Andre Citroën created the modern volume production car, as it is built today.

In addition to its front drive wheels, the Traction Avant has an all steel monocoque body and independent front and rear wheels. It becomes the most popular production car of its time.

The War Years. This period fostered the beginnings of what was to become Citroën's most famous model - the much-loved 2CV.

Ignoring strict rules laid down by the occupying power, Citroën engineering continues to work in secrecy during the war, modifying the design on the 2CV and developing the van that was to succeed the TUB: the Type H. The 2CV is presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1948 causing astonisment at its unexpected appearance, the ingenuity of its design, its ultra-economical character and its potential for varied use.

1950s. Throughout it's 41 years of existence, the 2CV remained a record beater, leading a life packed with travel and adventure. More than any other car, the 2CV symbolised France in other countries, and deserves the title of historical monument for the automotive industry in France.

At the 1955 Paris Motor Show the DS immediately causes a stir. Equipped with power assisted brakes with discs at the front, power steering and a semi-automatic gearbox. The DS engineering saves the life of General de Gaulle during the assassination attempt - despite a burst tyre, his driver was able to keep control of the car and drive his passenger to safety.

1960s. A time of expansion with new sales offices opening around the world and new factories and assembly plants set up in France and other European countries.

Models like the Ami are introduced and variations on popular models such as the DS and 2CV as well as a range of commercial vehicles.

1970s. In 1970, Citroën unveils the SM, a coupe whose bold styling lines make it a reference to this day. The new car boasted a V6 Maserati engine, with a top speed of over 200kph.

Also in 1970, Citroën brings out the GS, a mid range family saloon, which celebrated its debut year with no less than eight international prizes.

In 1974, Citroën joins forces with Peugeot under the PSA Group.

The oil crisis in turn led to the development of the LN and Visa, using Peugeot parts. The BX was unveiled at the 1982 Paris Motor Show and spawned several different variations.

1980s. Destined for a wide market, the BX is launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1982 with a choice of three engines.

Unveiled in 1989 the XM, equipped with 'Hydractive' the first intelligent hydropneumatic suspension system to be installed on a production car - won the Car of the Year title.

1990s. 1991 saw the launch of the ZX, able to outclass its competitors for roadholding quality, and in 1993 the sleekly elegant Xantia arrived.

Spearheading the range was the Xantia Activa, a model developed with a unique system known as SC CAR which provided a level of roadholding quality never before offered on a volume production car.

2000s. Today, every car, truck and bus on the road in the world relies on Citroën's history of invention and innovation.
In 2001, almost 1,250,000 buyers around the world chose Citroën. With some 10,000 sales outlets around the world, Citroën now generates 70% of its sales outside France and its international ambitions are clear.

To realise those ambitions, Citroën has put together its most attractive and complete range ever of vehicles and is present in all the main segments of the automotive market.

ABOUT
CHRYSLER
Chrysler Group LLC is something of a rarity in today's automotive world: a company that's capable of quickly responding to the needs of customers. In short, we are listening to you.

Today, we're building cars that reflect marked improvements in fuel economy, but sacrifice nothing in performance and capability. Like an 8-cylinder HEMI® engine that performs like an 8-cylinder engine when you need it to, then cuts back to a 4-cylinder engine when you don't.

Plus, you'll find peace of mind with plenty of choices big on safety. Every Dodge vehicle tested received a Five-Star frontal impact rating, something Ford and Chevy can't say.1 And every Jeep® SUV tested received a Five-Star side driver and side rear passenger impact rating, something Chevy's SUV class can't say.1

Now, we're working on a portfolio of Electric Vehicles. And we're bringing this electric-vehicle technology to your driveway as soon as 2010.

CHRYSLER HISTORY
The company was founded by Walter P. Chrysler on June 6, 1925, when the Maxwell Motor Company (est. 1904) was re-organized into the Chrysler Corporation.

Walter Chrysler had originally arrived at the ailing Maxwell-Chalmers company in the early 1920s, having been hired to take over and overhaul the company's troubled operations (just after a similar rescue job at the Willys car company).

In late 1923 production of the Chalmers automobile was ended.

Then in January 1924, Walter Chrysler launched the well-received Chrysler automobile. The Chrysler was a 6-cylinder automobile, designed to provide customers with an advanced, well-engineered car, but at a more affordable price than they might expect. (Elements of this car are traceable back to a prototype which had been under development at Willys at the time that Walter Chrysler was there). The original 1924 Chrysler included a carburetor air filter, high compression engine, full pressure lubrication, and an oil filter, at a time when most autos came without these features. Among the innovations in its early years would be the first practical mass-produced four-wheel hydraulic brakes, a system nearly completely engineered by Chrysler with patents assigned to Lockheed, and rubber engine mounts to reduce vibration. Chrysler also developed a road wheel with a ridged rim, designed to keep a deflated tire from flying off the wheel. This safety wheel was eventually adopted by the auto industry worldwide.

Following the introduction of the Chrysler, the Maxwell was dropped after its 1925 model year run, although in truth the new line of lower-priced 4-cylinder Chryslers which were then introduced for the 1926 model year were basically Maxwells which had been re-engineered and rebranded. It was during this time period of the early 1920s that Walter Chrysler assumed the presidency of Maxwell, with the company then ultimately incorporated under the Chrysler name.

ABOUT CHEVROLET

Chevrolet is a brand produced by General Motors Company. It is the top selling GM marque, with "Chevrolet" or "Chevy" being at times synonymous with GM. Chevrolet offers 18 vehicles and many different enhanced versions in its home market. The vehicles range from subcompact cars to medium duty commercial trucks. Its number one seller in the United States is the Silverado pickup.
CHEVROLET HISTORY
Louis Chevrolet was a race-car driver, and William Durant, founder of General Motors, had been forced out of GM in 1910. He wanted to use Chevrolet's designs to rebuild his own reputation. As head of Buick Motor Company, prior to founding GM, Durant had hired Chevrolet to drive Buicks in promotional races.

Chevrolet first used its "bowtie"[2] logo in 1913. It is said to have been designed from wallpaper Durant once saw in a French hotel. More recent research by historian Ken Kaufmann presents a compelling case that the logo is based from a logo for "Coalettes".

In 1915, Durant was in the process of setting up Chevrolet production facilities in Toronto, Canada. Later that year, during a luncheon meeting in New York with "Colonel Sam" McLaughlin, whose McLaughlin Motor Car Company manufactured McLaughlin-Buick cars, it was agreed that Chevrolets with McLaughlin-designed bodies would be added to the Canadian company's product line. Three years later, the two Canadian operations (Chevrolet was by then a part of GM in the United States) were bought by GM to become General Motors of Canada Ltd.

By 1916, Chevrolet was profitable enough to allow Durant to buy a majority of shares in GM. After the deal was completed in 1917, Durant was president of General Motors, and Chevrolet was merged into GM, becoming a separate division. In the 1918 model year, Chevrolet introduced the Model D, a V8-powered model in four-passenger roadster and five-passenger tourer models. It also started production of a overhead valve in-line six. Most cars of the era had only low compression flat head engines. These cars had 288in3 55 hp (41 kW) engines with Zenith carburetors and three-speed transmissions.

Chevrolet had a great influence on the American automobile market during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1957, Chevy made the first fuel injected engine. In 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet.

The basic Chevrolet small-block V-8 design has remained in continuous production since its debut in 1955, longer than any other mass-produced engine in the world, although current versions share few if any parts interchangeable with the original. Descendants of the basic small-block OHV V-8 design platform in production today have been much modified with advances such as aluminium block and heads, electronic engine management and sequential port fuel injection, to name but a few. Descendants of the small-block V-8 in the form of the LT V-8s, and had influence in the design of the LS V-8s, both of which are still installed in Chevrolet vehicles. The original small-block design is simplistic compared to the overhead-cam V-8 that Ford Motor Company used and continues to use in its line of larger cars and light trucks. Depending on the vehicle type, Chevrolet V-8s are built in displacements from 4.8 to 8.1 litres with outputs ranging from 295 horsepower (220 kW) to 638 horsepower (476 kW) as installed at the factory. The engine design has also been used over the years in GM products built and sold under the Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Opel (Germany) and Holden (Australia) nameplates.

ABOUT CADILLAC

Cadillac is a luxury vehicle marque owned by General Motors Company. Cadillac vehicles are sold in over 50 countries and territories, but mainly in North America.

Founded in 1902 as the Cadillac Automobile Company, it was purchased in 1909 by General Motors and over the next thirty years established itself as America's premier luxury car. Cadillac pioneered many accessories in automobiles, including full electrical systems, the clashless manual transmission, and the steel roof. The brand developed three engines, one of which (the V8) set the standard for the American automotive industry.

CADILLAC HISTORY
Cadillac has always stood for quality, superior craftsmanship, and innovation in the auto community. They have always been a leader in automotive innovation, including the electric starter, V8 engines, V16 engines, automatic transmissions, shatter resistant glass, and tail fins. Cadillac was the only American auto manufacturer during the great depression that made a profit.

Cadillac - the early years
Cadillac was actually a spin off of the Henry Ford Company, his second failed try at an auto business. In 1902 an engineer named Henry Leland was brought in by Ford's financial backers to access the value of the inventory, and Leland persuaded the financial backers to continue the business rather than liquidate it. In August 1902, the Cadillac Automobile Company was created, and Leland introduced the first Cadillac at the 1903 New York Auto Show, where it was a big hit. In that week, he sold over 2200 cars for $850 each, and Cadillac produced nearly 2500 cars in 1903, which was truly remarkable in that short time frame of when the company was founded. Leland used the body that Ford had designed when he was with the company, and combined it with an Oldsmobile engine. Ford started another company in 1903 that was finally successful, and he used his body that he built earlier, with his own engine. So the first Cadillac and first Ford models looked exactly alike. Only the engine was the main difference.

Cadillac started upscaling it's automobiles by 1905 by adding a four cylinder model, and in 1907 Cadillac started using Johanssen gauges to create precise measurements. This helped them win the Thomas Dewar Trophy in 1908, which was awarded to an auto manufacturer for leading the automobile industry in advancements. Interchangeable parts were what helped Cadillac earn this award. What was remarkable for this time is when three different Cadillac's were taken apart piece by piece, and the pieces all mixed together, then the three cars were rebuilt. All three cars drove away perfectly. Before this, cars were generally built one by one, and each car had their unique nuances, and many parts had to be tweaked or modified to work in each model. With precise engineering and measurements on parts, the parts could interchange on cars of that model with no problems.

GM was very interested in Cadillac, and in 1908 Durant, founder of GM, offered Leland 3 million dollars for Cadillac. GM lacked a high end model line, and GM wanted a product line for every type of car owner, from the basic to the high end, so they could sell a car to anyone. Leland held out for 3.5 million, and after having successful sales in 1909, Leland upped the price to 4.5 million. Durant accepted the offer, and paid in cash from profits he made from Buick (Durant also bought Olds Motor Works in 1908 with cash he earned from Buick). Durant kept Leland running Cadillac until 1917. Leland eventually created Lincoln Motor Works, which eventually became Cadillac’s biggest competitor.

ABOUT BUICK

Buick is a marque of automobile sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Qatar, Kuwait, and Israel by General Motors Company. It is GM's North America-based entry-level luxury brand.
BUICK HISTORY
Buick originated as an independent motor car manufacturer, the Buick Motor Company, incorporated on May 19, 1903, by David Dunbar Buick in Detroit, Michigan. Later that year, the struggling company was taken over by James H. Whiting (1842-1919), who moved it to his hometown of Flint, Michigan, and brought in William C. Durant in 1904 to manage his new acquisition. Buick sold his stock for a small sum upon departure, and died in modest circumstances twenty-five years later.

Between 1899 and 1902 two prototype vehicles were built in Detroit, Michigan by Walter Lorenzo Marr. Some documentation exists of the 1901 or 1902 prototype with tiller steering similar to the Oldsmobile Curved Dash.

In mid-1904 another prototype was constructed for an endurance run, which convinced James H. Whiting to authorize production of the first models offered to the public. The architecture of this prototype was the basis for the Model B.

The first Buick made for sale, the 1904 Model B, was built in Flint, Michigan. There were 37 Buicks made that year, none of which survive. There are, however, two replicas in existence — the 1904 endurance car at the Buick Gallery & Research Center in Flint, and a Model B assembled by an enthusiast in California for the division's 100th anniversary. Both of these vehicles use various parts from Buicks of that early era, as well as fabricated parts. These vehicles were each constructed with the two known surviving 1904 engines.

The power train and chassis architecture introduced on the Model B was continued through the 1909 Model F. The early success of Buick is attributed in part to the valve-in-head engine patented by Eugene Richard. The creation of General Motors is attributed in part to the success of Buick, so it can be said Marr and Richard's designs directly led to GM.

The basic design of the 1904 Buick was optimally engineered even by today's standards. The flat-twin engine is inherently balanced, with torque presented to the chassis in a longitudinal manner, actually cancelling front end lift, rather than producing undesirable lateral motion. The engine was mounted amidships, now considered the optimal location.

Durant was a natural promoter, and Buick soon became the largest car maker in America. Using the profits from this, Durant embarked on a series of corporate acquisitions, calling the new mega-corporation General Motors. At first, the manufacturers comprising General Motors competed against each other, but Durant ended that. He wanted each General Motors division to target one class of buyer, and in his new scheme Buick was near the top — only the Cadillac brand had more prestige. This is the position Buick occupies to this day in the General Motors lineup.

At first, Buick followed the likes of Napier in automobile racing, winning the first-ever race held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In 1911, Buick introduced its first closed-body car, four years ahead of Ford.[16] In 1929, Buick Motor Division launched the Marquette sister brand, designed to bridge the price gap between Buick and Oldsmobile; however, Marquette was discontinued in 1930.

The model name Century came about when Buick was designing its first production automobile capable of reaching a speed of 100mph. The division needed to come up with a name. One of the Buick executives had returned from a recent trip to the British isles and told the other executives that the British referred to going 100mph as "doing the century". The executives liked the Century name and it stuck.

Overall sales of the Buick brand peaked in the 1984 model year, when falling oil prices and the prevailing economic recovery buoyed the sales of traditional full-sized automobiles, in combination with the popularity of newer, smaller offerings and performance oriented turbocharged models. Subsequently, sales fell as downsized premium luxury coupe, full-sized and mid-sized models were poorly received by the public in the period between 1985 and 1990. The number of Buick models on offer fell over time, with the compact and performance segments being abandoned altogether.

The ideal Buick customer is comfortably well off, possibly not quite rich enough to afford a Cadillac, nor desiring the ostentation of one, but definitely in the market for a car above the norm. Over time Buick has become a traditional luxury brand in the GM group whereas Cadillac has focused more on cutting edge products.

Buick began consolidating its lineup in 2005, replacing the Century and Regal with the LaCrosse (known as the Buick Allure in Canada), and the LeSabre and Park Avenue with the Lucerne in 2006. Both of its SUVs, the Rendezvous and Rainier were discontinued in 2007 to make way for the new and highly successful 2008 Enclave, while the slow-selling Terraza minivan was also dropped for 2008. This left the marque with just three models in the United States. In 2008, Buick sales slipped from an average of four cars per dealer per month to three, in addition to two trucks.

Speculation existed, however, as to whether GM would eliminate the Buick brand to cut costs. This followed the temporary suspension of GM's planned Zeta project to develop new rear wheel drive cars fitting the Buick market niche. GM also has started consolidating of Buick, Pontiac, and GMC trucks into single dealer franchises, which would make it simple to eliminate the Buick brand without leaving dealers devoid of product. However, with the development of the Zeta platform still ongoing (including the development of the 2006 VE Commodore and the new Chevrolet Camaro), it may be likely that Buick will survive. In January 2009, Buick unveiled the new 2010 LaCrosse sedan, a radical departure from the model it will replace in mid-2009 and from Buicks of the recent past. So far, the car has drawn praise from critics and auto journalists and adds another bright spot to Buick's stable. There have been rumors on Edmund's and Motor Trend that Buick will have a roadster sedan in 2010.

In the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick tied with Jaguar as the most dependable brand in the United States.

At its extended product review in August 2009, GM announced Buick's future lineup. A small Pontiac Vibe sized crossover based on the Gamma II platform will be produced. Another, larger, compact crossover will start production in 2011, and a hybrid version will utilize the 2-mode hybrid system that was planned to be used in the cancelled Saturn VUE hybrid. The Regal will return in 2011 along with a new compact sedan that will be assembled in China.

ABOUT BUGATTI

Bugatti was founded in Molsheim, France, as a manufacturer of high performance automobiles by Ettore Bugatti, an Italian man described as an eccentric genius who was in conjunction with Italian sports car manufacturers, Ferrari and Lamborghini.

The original company is legendary for producing some of the most exclusive cars in the world as well as some of the fastest. The original Bugatti brand failed with the coming of World War II, like many high-end marques of the time. The death of Ettore's son Jean was also a contributory factor. The company struggled financially and released one last model in the 1950s before eventually being purchased for its airplane parts business in the 1960s. Today the name is owned by Volkswagen Group who have revived it as a builder of very limited production sports cars.

ABOUT BMW

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), (English: Bavarian Motor Works) is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company. Founded in 1916, it is known for its performance and luxury vehicles. It owns and produces the MINI brand, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

BMW HISTORY
To better understand BMW today you have to know and understand BMW history. The last century gives the “flavor” of today’s BMW cars, the ingredient that makes them so special. This “special” can be almost seen as the soul of a person. BMW cars have an unmistakably personality and an obsessive care about the feeling of driving, thus their slogan "the ultimate driving machine". This creates a bond between the car and the driver that may last for a lifetime.

These three magic letters stand for Bayerische Motoren Werke, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works. The "Motor" is the core of this acronym and is the foundation; the key part around which BMW builds every product.

BMWDrives invites you to be part in this amazing trip and you will find out the story that lies behind BMW.
